U.S. jobless claims unexpectedly rose. Initial claims rose 36,000 to 482,000 in the week of January 16. Economists had expected a 4,000 decrease. An economist at the U.S. Labor Department attributed some of the increase to an administrative backlog in filing claims after the holidays.
