Dow industrials fall below 7,000; lowest since '97

Stocks near 12-year lows

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks slumped Monday morning, with the Dow falling to its lowest point in nearly 12 years after troubled insurance company American InternationaI Group posted the biggest quarterly loss in U.S. history.
The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) lost 205 points, or 2.9%, over two hours into the session. The Dow had dropped as low as 6842.54, its lowest trading level since April 29, 1997.

APThe Dow Jones industrial average has fallen below 7,000 Monday for the first time in more than 11 years as investors grow even more pessimistic about the health of banks, and in turn the economy.
A staggering $61.7 billion in quarterly losses at insurer American International Group Inc. is touching off fresh fears about the health of the nation's financial system.
