msn lifestyle: women

You're a busy woman. This we know. So we've pulled it all together for you: makeup that flatters, look-younger hair tricks, and much more.

Kiss your old lipstick good-bye

If you've been wearing the same shade since the Rachel was the hottest haircut, it's official: You're stuck in a lipstick rut. The easiest way to try something new and still feel like you? Pick a color similar to your favorite formula but with a hint of gold, says Los Angeles-based makeup artist Julie Hewett. (Two of our favorites: Lancôme Juicy Rouge in Sorbet and Avon Double Impact Lipcolor in Champagne.) The big (surprising) impact of that tiny change? Instantly brighter eyes.

Create cheekbones

Forget '80s-style racing stripes. There's a far more natural way to contour your cheeks, says celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose: Choose a powder blush a couple of shades darker than your skin tone (like a bronzer, but not too brown). Starting right under your cheekbone, sweep the color toward your hairline, fading it slightly as you go; then apply a golden-toned illuminating powder or cream directly above. (We like BeComing Added Brilliance Powder Blush and Highlighter in Tempting; it contains both shades.) As the higher spot catches the light and the darker, lower area recedes, voilà! More-prominent cheekbones.

Prevent foundation from caking around your nose

The secret, says Barose, is to first apply a thin layer of eye gel around your nostrils. (Try Origins No Puffery eye gel or Nivea Visage Soothing Eye Gel.) As the gel dries, it creates a smoother surface for makeup to attach to. And choose a stick-formula foundation — its less creamy texture also wards off creases.

Perform (almost) pain-free waxing

When it comes to waxing, what you don't know can hurt you. So here's the skin-saving scoop: Caffeine can make you more sensitive to pain, so break that coffee habit for a week before you plan to wax. Another factor: Are you using Retin A or a glycolic acid product? According to Tina West, M.D., a dermatologist in Chevy Chase, Maryland, both cause epidermal cells to separate, so the wax could pull off an entire layer of skin! Again, stop using these products for a week before hair removal. Lastly, look for a wax that (1) doesn't require gauze strips, which can cause more irritation; and (2) contains a soothing ingredient like chamomile or aloe, says Cindy Barshop, owner of New York City's Completely Bare Spas. (Try Nair Cool Fruit Wax Strips or A.I.I. Surgi-Wax Sticks with Green Tea & Aloe.)

Swap your hair hue, change your life

A dye job can alter more than just the shade on your head: According to a recent Clairol survey, a new hair color can also influence how people perceive you. Looking to gain the ear of your mother-in-law? Become a brunet — the Clairol respondents rated them as more trustworthy. Want to be given that challenging new work assignment? Try red; your boss might see you as more of a risk taker. Aching to make that all-too-perfect new neighbor just a little jealous? Go blond — they're deemed the wealthiest and most glamorous. If you're not quite ready for a permanent color switch, try out a new tint for a day with a colored mousse, such as Keune Color Styling Mousse.

Own a fan brush

It's tough to remove that despised line of demarcation on the jawline left by foundation: Fingers can leave smudges, and sponge wedges can remove too much. But the feathery bristles of a fan brush are perfect for blending out edges, says Keri Blair, a senior makeup artist for M.A.C. Cosmetics. (Try Shu Uemura Fan Brush or M.A.C. 207 Duster.)

Superclean your hair

Styling products can enhance any haircut, but they can also leave behind lots of unwanted goop. Jason Hayes, a hairstylist for the musical Hairspray— whose actors are unquestionably the most spritzed, moussed and gelled on Broadway — has been fighting this with an unexpected remedy: dandruff shampoo. Head & Shoulders Refresh, he's discovered, is a great way to remove buildup and soothe related scalp irritation. Plus, since it's gentle enough to use every day, regular sudsing with this shampoo may even prevent buildup from forming in the first place — not bad for what started out as a flake fighter. (Most traditional clarifying shampoos are designed as weekly or even monthly fixes, because if they're used too often, they can strip away hair's natural oils. However, for a major case of helmet head, you'll still need to supplement H&S with a dose of clarifying shampoo.)

Apply lavender liner

If a dark brown or black eyeliner — already harsh during daylight hours — seeps into facial lines, forget about it: immediate aging. But a light lavender can actually have the opposite effect, says makeup artist Nick Barose, visually plumping out lines and creating a soft, youthful glow around your lashes. Plus, there's no quicker way to whiten up a yellowish eye tinge. (Try Stýli-Style Flat Pencil in Paris.)

Get-Gorgeous Secrets:

Fill out your face

If your features have lost a little shape, forget a superlong cut, says Anthony Cristiano, the Chicago-based creative director for Elizabeth Arden Salons and Spas; it can drag down your entire face. What will add back fullness: a bob that hits below your chin or at your collarbone, with graduated layers from brows to jawline and back into the nape of your neck.

Give your hair oomph

As years go by, hair tends to flatten out. You could spray your hair out to there, but a too-fixed style doesn't take off years either. Enter Do-dads hairpieces. In a Good Housekeeping Research Institute test, three quarters of our testers agreed that Do-dads boosted fullness; many were also impressed with the hair's natural texture and colors. A few complained about the visibility of the combs, so stylist Nunzio Saviano offered help: Using two combs, pull a two-inch section of hair from each side of your face to the back of your head; attach. But leave out an inch-and-a-half-wide section between these pieces, at your crown, and lay it over the clips to mask them.

Get an "eye job"

Lids starting to sag? Slicking hair into a taut ponytail will certainly pull up your features. But if you're looking for a softer, more natural way to fight gravity, try this trick from Cristiano: When hair is 80 percent dry, spritz your roots with a texturizing spray. (Try KMS Hair Play Paste Up Spray.) Then use a blow dryer with a nozzle attachment to blast the hair around your face upward, elevating the roots away from your hairline; set with a finishing spray. (Try Sebastian Collection Shpritz Forte.) This root raising will open your eyes and give your face a lift.

Stop gray-creep instantly

No time for a dye job but in desperate need of a touch-up? There's a new (better) remedy for this age-old problem: ColorMark, a coloring gadget created by a former beauty editor frustrated with the temporary-coverage options out there. Unlike hair mascara, this tool uses liquid color and comes in eight shades, so it blends in naturally. In a GHRI test, volunteers loved the quick results and ease of use. The one caveat: Several testers reported stickiness or stiffness after application. But since the color washes out with shampoo, any side effects are only temporary.

Want to know how to look well rested on just three hours of sleep? From working on hectic movie sets to managing her own cosmetics line, A-list makeup artist Paula Dorf is no stranger to lost zzz's. Here's how she perks up bleary eyes.

1. Apply a color-correcting concealer: If your undereye circles are gray, choose an orange-beige formula; if they're red, opt for a yellow hue. (Try Physicians Formula Wanderful Wands Brightening Cream in Neutral and Yellow.)

2. Use a pinky-peach eye pencil along the inner rim of your lower lashes (try Paula Dorf Enhancer Baby Eyes); dark colors will make you look more drawn.

3. Brush on mascara in an eggplant shade — it brightens tired eyes better than black does. (Try T. LeClerc Mascara in Prune.)
